Ribble Steam Railway & Museum

Responsible for the running of the trains, ensuring that everything from safety to customer experience goes smoothly during service days and special events. If you’ve ever dreamed of being part of a working heritage railway, this is where the action happens.

Operations roles cover everything to do with the movement of trains and day-to-day railway running. It’s ideal for those who love structure, teamwork, and being out on the railway.


Here are the main roles involved:


 1. Cleaner / Trainee

Entry point for those interested in footplate work


Learn the basics of caring for locomotives


Clean the engine, prep tools, and assist the fireman


 This is the the first step to becoming a fireman or driver.


 2. Fireman

Works on the footplate beside the driver


Maintains boiler pressure by firing coal, monitoring water levels


Assists with braking and engine prep


 3. Driver

In full charge of the locomotive


Operates the engine under rules and signals


Works closely with the fireman, guard, and signalman


 4. Guard

In charge of the train once it’s in motion


Ensures safety of passengers, checks doors, signals readiness to depart


Communicates with driver using traditional hand signals or whistle


5. Shunter

Safely couples/uncouples wagons and coaches


Organizes stock movements in the yard


Works closely with the guard and driver



 6. Signalman

Operates points and signals in the signal box


Manages train movements and line safety


Communicates with guards, drivers, and control



 7. Platform / Station Staff

Help passengers board, give safety instructions


Make announcements and provide customer support


Keep the platform area safe and tidy
